Asbestos is only dangerous when disturbed. If it is safely managed and contained, it does not present a health hazard. Do not remove asbestos unnecessarily - removing it can be more dangerous than leaving it in place and managing it.
Asbestos in the Home
Homeowners can find out what to do about asbestos in our Private Housing advice section:
Asbestos in the Workplace
-
Licensed asbestos contractors - find details below on where to send your ASB5 notification forms for premises enforced by the council
-
Managers of non-domestic buildings, including office premises - find out about your duty to manage asbestos on the HSE website using the link from this page
-
Tradesmen, including electricians, plumbers, joiners, painters, decorators and plasterers. Asbestos is a hidden killer, so protect yourself, you are more at risk than you think - go to The Hidden Killer campaign on the HSE website using our link
Contractors - Licensed and Non-licensed Work
If any ACMs need to be sealed, encapsulated or removed, a licensed contractor must carry out the work if the materials are high risk, for example pipe insulation and asbestos insulating panels.
If the materials are lower risk, for example asbestos cement, then an unlicensed but trained and competent contractor may carry out this work, following the appropriate Health and Safety Executive Asbestos Essentials guidance and task sheets.
Notification of Licensed Asbestos Work
For premises in Eastbourne enforced by the council, licensed asbestos contractors should send a copy of their Health and Safety Executive ASB5 notification forms to the council's Environmental Health service.
You can email us the HSE online notification form in PDF format, together with a copy of your licence, to environmentalhealth@eastbourne.gov.uk
The documents should also be sent to the HSE South East Area Office at formsadmin.eastgrinstead@hse.gsi.gov.uk
Alternatively, paper copies can be sent to:

Disposal of Asbestos Waste
Make sure you double-bag it and clearly label as asbestos waste. The waste must be disposed of at a licensed tip as hazardous/special waste.
Contact the Environment Agency to find out if they will assist you in disposing of it. They may charge for this service.
In Eastbourne, bonded asbestos is accepted at the Household Waste Recycling Site (rubbish tip) in St. Philips Avenue, run by Veolia Environmental Services on behalf of East Sussex County Council.
