Bar and Cellar Safety in Pubs and Clubs

Find out about the council's awareness campaign to raise health and safety standards in pubs and clubs.

Safety Awareness for Pubs and Clubs

The leisure and entertainment industry is part of the thriving economic community in Eastbourne, with some 90 licensed pubs and clubs in the borough.

Public safety in bars, clubs and pubs is paramount to Eastbourne Borough Council. The council's Environmental Health service works with licence holders to ensure that their premises and work practices do not put people's health, safety or welfare at risk.

Inspection Programme October 2009 - March 2010

The health and safety team carried out a series of inspections of pubs and clubs in Eastbourne between October 2009 and March 2010, to check they were complying with the law.

We worked with our external partners including Sussex Police and East Sussex Fire and Rescue Service. The main purpose was to raise standards in the pub and club trade in the town through education and stepped enforcement.

Go to our Information Pack and Leaflets page for downloadable versions of the materials in the printed campaign packs we handed out at our inspection visits.

Campaign Updates and Evaluation

A press release for the campaign was issued on 5 October 2009, called Roll Out the Barrel Safely - go to Related Pages to view the release.

This website will be regularly updated with the latest information about the campaign and good practice guidance for licensed businesses.

Following the inspection programme, a newsletter update and evaluation questionnaire were sent out to local pubs and clubs in April 2010 - find out more on the pages in this section.
