Business Rates, also called non-domestic rates (NDR), are charged on properties not used for domestic purposes such as shops, factories, hotels and offices.
Business Rates are collected by us on behalf of central government.
The money goes into a pool which is distributed to all councils across the country based on their population.
We collect about £25 million a year in business rates from 2,800 business properties in our town. We receive £3.9 million back from the central government pool which helps to fund our Council services.
