Smokefree Taxis and Private Hire Vehicles

No Smoking Sign

Advice for taxi and private hire drivers about the new smokefree legislation.

From 1 July 2007 all public places and workplaces which are enclosed or substantially enclosed must be smokefree. This includes all public service vehicles as well as taxis and private hire vehicles at all times.

This applies even when you are not working, so do not smoke in the vehicle at any time, or allow other occupants to smoke, as you could be liable to a fine or prosecution.

Displaying No Smoking Signs in Your Vehicle

All taxi and private hire vehicles are required to display appropriate smokefree signage in order to meet the requirements of the legislation.

No-smoking signs for vehicles must show the international no-smoking symbol at least 70mm in diameter, in each compartment of the vehicle in which people can be carried.

The council's Licensing Team advise that you display smokefree signage on all windows of doors to the vehicle. We will not issue licences to vehicles which fail to display smokefree signs.

Signage can be downloaded or ordered free of charge from the Smokefree England website.
