Street Trading - Prohibited and Consent Streets in Eastbourne

The council is proposing a new policy and approach on street trading, but currently it is restricted within Eastbourne, with many streets designated ‘prohibited streets’ under the Local Government (Miscellaneous Provisions) Act 1982. In general terms it is currently an offence for any person to engage in street trading in a designated area without the council's agreement.

Proposed New Policy - Re-designation of Consent Streets

If the Council, after considering any representations, proceed to pass the resolution, the re-designation will come into force on 25 August 2012.

Current Policy - Consent Areas

The information below relates to our current Street Trading Policy, but the council is proposing a new policy and approach on street trading. Under the new policy the majority of streets would be considered as consent streets.

Currently, although the main pedestrianised areas in the town centre are designated ‘consent streets’ it is not our practice to encourage street trading in these areas.  We do, however generally support events such as the French Market and Cracker Night.

Our current policy regarding street trading is that:

1. Street Trading should not be encouraged.

2. Consent may be given for "unique events".

3. Consent will not be given in respect of traders and services already available in the vicinity.
