Find out what permissions or licences are needed to hold a street party.

We love street parties in Eastbourne and have made it as easy as possible for you to apply.

Road Closures

Typically a street party will involve closing the street or streets on which the party is being held.

To do this, you need to submit a road closure application at least six weeks before the event is due to take place.

The council will not normally charge for road closure permissions for street parties or other small scale events by charitable or community organisations.

To apply for a road closure, please telephone the Licensing Team on 01323 415936. The deadline for applications for street parties for the Royal Wedding requiring road closures was 1 April 2011. For ideas on other occasions for summer street parties, go to the Streets Alive website using the link from this page.

When Will You Need Additional Permissions?

If your street party has some of the elements listed below, you may also require additional permissions:

  • If the event will attract over 150 persons at any one time

  • If the event features a stage or any other constructions

  • If the event features the sale or supply of alcohol by way of either a bar or a local pub

  • If the organiser is seeking more than one road closure

  • If the event features rides or inflatables

  • If the event is advertised outside of the local area, and looks to encourage people who are not residents of the street

  • If the event is to include any form of entertainment

  • If there is an intention to sell any items or foodstuffs in the street

When Will You Need a Temporary Event Notice?

Please note that you will also need to apply for a Temporary Event Notice (TEN) if you intend to do any of the following:

  • Hold live performances, film screenings or dancing

  • Play live or pre-recorded music for entertainment purposes, that is not incidential to the event

  • Sell alcohol

  • Hold a raffle

  • Sell food and hot drinks between 11pm and 5am

Please telephone the Licensing Team on 01323 415936 for advice.

Large Events

If your event includes certain activities or is likely to attract more than 150 people, you will also need to apply for an event site licence.

Depending on the size of your event (and other considerations) you may need to submit your event site licence application more than eight weeks before the event takes place.

Please contact the Events Team on 01323 415442 for advice on lead in times for the various types of large events.
