Dangerous Wild Animal Licences

A licence is required from the council for anybody wishing to keep a dangerous wild animal.

A full list of animals considered to be dangerous under the Dangerous Wild Animals Act 1976 is available on the Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs (DEFRA) website.

The licence requires the owner to keep the animal in suitable and safe conditions, for the welfare of the animal and protection of the public. Licences can be refused or issued subject to conditions.

An annual fee is also required and may involve costs of veterinary inspections and fees. The only time a licence is not required is if the animal is kept in a zoo, circus or pet shop.

To apply for a licence to keep dangerous wild animals in Eastbourne, please contact the council's Environmental Health service.
