Construction

Building works in progress

The construction industry has:

  • an unskilled/qualified workforce

  • a shortfall of entrants, and

  • a poor image as a sector and as a career choice

Despite these negatives, the construction industry contributes about £18 billion or 10% of the regions Gross Domestic Product (GDP) which is predicted to grow.

In Eastbourne

Locally, Eastbourne has an extensive amount of construction work due which includes the £150 million private investment Eastbourne Town Centre Regeneration Scheme.

Economic Development has recognised this as an economic opportunity to grow professional businesses and upskill residents.

An Eastbourne Construction Partnership was formed to work together to make the most of this opportunity.

The Partnerships main initiative is the Eastbourne Construction Training & Employment Charter. All businesses and developers are encouraged to sign up to commit to the principals of the Charter to retain construction economic opportunities within the area.
